Meta pilots Ray-Ban AI glasses in Gujarat for visually impaired
Meta's new proposed pilot in Gujarat is testing Ray-Ban smart glasses with always-on cameras and AI to help visually impaired people navigate daily life.
While the tech could be a game-changer for accessibility, experts are worried about sensitive data being recorded and possibly used for things like AI training or ads.
Privacy groups demand Meta pilot safeguards
Privacy groups, including Advocate Apar Gupta, cofounder and director of Internet Freedom Foundation, want tougher safeguards before the project expands, like keeping data on the device, deleting it quickly, and getting public input.
They also point out that India's current data protection law does not really cover wearables or bystander notice.
Meanwhile, disability rights groups support the idea but say privacy cannot take a back seat.
The project is still under government review as similar glasses face legal challenges abroad.
