Nottingham researchers test BlueSky AI app for maternal depression
Researchers in Nottingham are testing an AI app designed to pick up signs of depression in pregnant and new mothers.
The app, developed with AI firm BlueSky, analyzes facial expressions, speech, and automatic movements while users journal or read, hoping to catch mental health struggles sooner.
Nearly 1 3rd flagged in study
The study runs until October 2026 and flags users with high depression scores so health care professionals can follow up.
Early results show nearly one-third of participants might be struggling.
Dr. Neil Nixon says early detection is vital since suicide causes 39% of maternal deaths between six weeks and one year after pregnancy in the UK.
Dr Nixon says app aids clinicians
Lizzie said that once you leave the hospital, it can be tricky and is a difficult time mentally.
Sally Bunkman from PANDAS praised the app for encouraging women to speak out but reminded everyone that human support is still essential.
Dr. Nixon also made clear: the app helps clinicians but doesn't replace them.
