Popular diabetes drugs linked to higher risk of bone problems
A new study says popular diabetes and weight-loss drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy could slightly raise your risk of bone problems, including osteoporosis and gout.
The research was presented at this year's big orthopedic conference, with scientists suggesting that the rapid weight loss from these medications might put extra stress on your bones.
Users had a small but noticeable increase in risk
Researchers at Michigan State University reviewed health records from more than 73,000 people using GLP-1 drugs.
Compared to others, users had a small but noticeable increase in risk: 0.9% higher for osteoporosis, 0.8% for gout, and 0.1% for osteomalacia.
While this doesn't prove the medications are directly to blame, experts say it's smart for anyone on these drugs, especially if you're at risk, to keep an eye on bone health going forward.
