What's the story

Reddit is the latest platform to be added to Australia's upcoming social media ban for users under 16. The announcement was made by Communications Minister Anika Wells today. The law, which will come into effect on December 10, already includes popular platforms like Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), Snapchat, TikTok, YouTube and Instagram.

Additional platforms

Other platforms under consideration

Along with Reddit, Australian streaming site Kick has also been added to the list of platforms banned for under-16s. Wells said this list is just a starting point and more platforms could be added in the future. Other services under consideration include Discord, Twitch, GitHub and Roblox. YouTube was initially excluded from this list as it was seen as an educational tool but was later included after other companies on the list protested against its exclusion.

Penalties

Platforms, not parents, responsible for underage access

The law places the responsibility on platforms, not parents, to prevent underage access. Companies that fail to do so could be fined up to AU$49.5 million (about $32 million). Wells said, "There's a time and place for social media in Australia, but there's not a place for predatory algorithms, harmful content and toxic popularity [meters] manipulating Australian children."

Criticism

Opposition raises concerns over late additions

Shadow Communications Minister Melissa McIntosh has raised concerns about "policy on the run" and late additions to the legislation confusing parents and kids. However, Wells and eSafety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant defended their position, saying companies had been given enough notice of their inclusion in this ban. They also stressed that platforms must take steps to block under-16s or face hefty fines.

Expansion

Government is watching these platforms closely

The government is keeping an eye on other platforms such as Discord, OpenAI's AI-generated video platform Sora and Bluesky. These could be added to the list in the future. Wells said, "These platforms, it is their duty every single day to consider whether they are going to be caught up in the law and whether they themselves, as a social media platform, will be required."
