Space race: Bezos, Musk developing AI data centers in orbit
Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk are now racing to build AI data centers in space.
Their big idea? Use endless solar energy up there to power the next wave of artificial intelligence, while taking pressure off Earth's already stressed electricity and cooling systems.
Blue Origin has been at this for over a year, and SpaceX is also pursuing this initiative.
Why does this matter?
Bezos thinks space-based data centers could outdo Earth's within 10-20 years, thanks to steady solar power and stable conditions.
Musk is planning upgrades to Starlink satellites so they can handle AI computing—part of a push that could see SpaceX valued at $800 billion or more.
He's also eyeing a 2026 IPO that might top $1 trillion.
If these plans work out, we could see the heart of AI move off-planet, making tech more sustainable and changing how we think about computing forever.
