Titan, Saturn's moon, may not have global ocean: Study

Technology

Turns out Titan, Saturn's biggest moon, might not be hiding a giant underground ocean after all.
A new study (Nature, Dec. 17, 2025) says Titan is more like a frozen world with high-pressure ice and scattered pockets of liquid water—no single massive sea beneath the surface.
Scientists figured this out by taking a fresh look at data from NASA's Cassini mission.

What changed our minds about Titan?

Researchers at NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab found that Titan pushes back against Saturn's tidal forces more than anyone expected.
That doesn't line up with the idea of a deep global ocean. Instead, there are slushy layers and small water pockets trapped in ice—think scattered puddles instead of one big pool.

Why does it matter?

This shakes up what we thought we knew about "ocean worlds" in our solar system and could even affect future missions like NASA's Dragonfly drone.
If you're into space or wondering where life might exist beyond Earth, it looks like Titan just got a little less promising—but still super interesting!
