Asian Games 2018: Indian archer Deepika Kumari down with dengue

Ahead of the 2018 Asian Games, India's top-ranked archer Deepika Kumari is down with dengue. She missed the flight to Jakarta, which carried the rest of the Indian archery contingency, but she is expected to leave for the tournament on Friday. Deepika is ranked number 7 in the world in archery. Here are further details.

The numerous achievements of Deepika Kumari

Deepika is one of the most talented Indian athletes. She won the Archery World Cup in 2012, 2013 and 2018, and even climbed to world number 1 in 2012. Commonwealth Games 2010, in Delhi, saw her winning gold medals in both individual and recurve team categories. Deepika was awarded the Arjuna Award in 2012 by former President Pranab Mukherjee.

    Deepika's hardships while growing up

Deepika's father was an autorickshaw driver and her mother was a nurse at Ranchi Medical College. Deepika was searching for food one day when she came across archery at a local sports academy. Her parents were earlier not supportive of her passion as they had to cut down on the family budget. However, they gave her support and bought all the equipments.

Ladies First: How Netflix brought Deepika's struggles to the world

Netflix had released a documentary on the ace archer on the International Women's Day, this year. The movie charts the cultural, economical and familial challenges on Kumari's way to becoming an Olympian. Directed by Uraaz Bahl, the documentary film won multiple awards at various film festivals including the London International Film Festival and the Mallorca Film Festival.
