Bangladesh Premier League: Upcoming season to feature only 5 teams
What's the story
The upcoming season of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) will see only five teams competing. The decision was announced by Iftikhar Rahman Mithu, the secretary of the BPL Governing Council. He said that this was due to time constraints ahead of next year's ICC T20 World Cup. The tournament is scheduled to take place from mid-December to mid-January.
Growth potential
Starting with 5 teams
"Given the short window we have this year, we are comfortable with five teams," Iftikhar told reporters at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium. He added that while they are starting with five teams this year, there's potential for expansion in the future. The decision is part of a strategic plan to ensure a successful tournament within a limited timeframe.
Team uncertainty
Fortune Barishal's participation in jeopardy
The participation of reigning BPL champions Fortune Barishal in the next edition is doubtful. Their captain Tamim Iqbal recently announced a boycott of all cricket under Aminul Islam's leadership, calling him illegal. Iftikhar expressed hope that Fortune Barishal would reconsider their decision and participate in the upcoming tournament.
Franchise criteria
Focus on franchise selection for upcoming BPL season
Iftikhar also stressed on strict franchise selection for the upcoming BPL season. He said, "The problems we faced in the last BPL were mainly related to the franchises." The governing council will focus on financial stability and cricket management capabilities of potential franchises to avoid any controversies like those witnessed in previous seasons.
