Star England all-rounder Chris Woakes has announced his retirement from international cricket. The 36-year-old bows out after a stellar 15-year career. Woakes was expected to play the Ashes this year Down Under, but a dislocated shoulder during the 5th Test against India ruled him out. The all-rounder took 396 wickets and scored 3,705 runs across formats for England in his illustrious career.

In a statement announcing his retirement, Woakes said, "The moment has come and I've decided that the time is right for me to retire from international cricket." He added, "Playing for England was something I aspired to do since I was a kid dreaming in the back garden, and I feel incredibly fortunate to have lived out those dreams."

Two World Cup titles for Woakes
Woakes won the 2019 ODI World Cup and the 2022 T20 World Cup with England. He was also England's Player of the Series during the 2023 Ashes. He added, "Making my debut in 2011 in Australia seems like yesterday, but time flies when you're having fun. Lifting two World Cups and being part of some amazing Ashes series is something I never thought was possible, and those memories and celebrations with my teammates will stay with me forever."

A look at his international stats
Woakes made his international debut during England's 2010/11 tour of Australia. He featured in two T20Is and three ODIs. In only his second ODI, the English all-rounder registered 6/45, being adjudged the Player of the Match. Until 2025, Woakes played 62 Tests, 122 ODIs, and 33 T20Is for England. He recorded 192, 173, and 31 wickets as well as 2,034, 1,524, and 147 runs in the three formats, respectively.

Woakes excluded from Ashes squad
As mentioned, Woakes was expected to play the 2025/26 Ashes series in Australia. However, he suffered a shoulder dislocation in the 5th and final Test against India in July this year. In a brave act, Woakes came out to bat with one hand, with the other carrying a sling, to save the Test. Woakes was omitted from England's Ashes squad thereafter.
