Team Australia has announced an unchanged squad for the second Ashes Test against England, to be held at the Gabba. The decision comes even as captain Pat Cummins continues to remain absent from the team. The selectors have opted for a cautious approach with Cummins's return from a back stress injury. He missed Australia's stunning two-day victory in Perth and will now also miss out on the Gabba Test, starting on December 4.

Cummins has been gradually increasing his workload and was part of the squad that traveled to Perth. He bowled in the nets before continuing at Cricket NSW headquarters earlier this week. On Friday, he bowled to Steve Smith with a pink ball for an hour, apparently unencumbered and at full pace. However, the Brisbane match comes too soon for him, according to selectors.

Cummins will travel to Brisbane with the rest of the squad to continue his preparations for a return later in the series. The Adelaide Test starting December 17 is now his target. In Cummins's absence, Brendan Doggett, who made his debut in the first Test, retains his place along with Usman Khawaja. Khawaja struggled with back spasms in Perth and managed to bat once, scoring just two runs.

Opening partnership and potential changes
The opening partnership for Australia remains a question mark. Travis Head, who stood in at No. 1 with Khawaja unable to open in the second innings in Perth, is in contention after his blistering 123. There's also a possibility of Head opening alongside Khawaja with Jake Weatherald, who faltered on Test debut, missing out. Josh Inglis can take Head's number-five spot in this case.
