Gautam Gambhir could buy stake in Delhi Capitals: Report
Former Indian Premier League (IPL) hero Gautam Gambhir is set to buy stake in Delhi Capitals. According to a report in The Times of India, Gambhir has been in talks with GMR Group for several months. GMR Group owns 50% stake in the franchise, whereas, the rest 50% stake is owned by JSW Sports. Here are further details.
According to sources, negotiations are said to be over and both parties are waiting for a clearance from the Governing Council of IPL. The report also states that Gambhir is keen on buying a 10% stake, which is around the value of Rs. 100 crore. Gambhir and his spokesperson weren't willing to reveal anything. However, it has been understood that talks are on.
Gambhir enjoyed his best time in the IPL with Kolkata Knight Riders. He moved to KKR from the Daredevils in the IPL 2011 auction. He was made the highest paid cricketer in IPL history back then. Gambhir was also named as the skipper of the team. He led the side from 2011 to 2017. Under his leadership, KKR won two IPL titles.
Meanwhile, JSW bought 50% stake in the side for Rs. 550 crore last year. It changed the name of the franchise from Delhi Daredevils to Delhi Capitals. The team went on to finish third last season after being highly inconsistent over the years.
Gambhir moved to Delhi in 2018 and was dropped as their skipper with Shreyas Iyer taking over midway in the season. He had amassed just 85 runs in six matches. However, he showed his mettle before that and scored at will. He was a consistent force for KKR and led the side from the front. The players also gave their best under his leadership.
Gambhir scored 4,217 runs in 154 IPL matches at an average of 31.23. He smashes 36 fifties with a best of 91. His feats included 491 fours and 59 sixes.
