India defeat South Africa by innings and 202-runs: Records broken
  • India came up with a dominating performance to tame South Africa in the three-Test series.

They defeated Proteas by an innings and 202 runs in the Test in Ranchi.

As the Men In Blue scripted a 3-0 whitewash, India assert their dominance in the format and in the ICC World Test Championship.

We look at some of the records broken in this series.

  • Indian opener Rohit Sharma is enjoying the form of his life as he slammed his maiden 200, following which:

He became the fifth Indian to score two 150+ scores in a series, asides being the fifth Indian opener to score 500+ runs in a series.

He is also the first Indian to score 500+ Test runs in a series against Proteas.

  • Opening stand

  • South Africa have undoubtedly been poor with the bat in the series, with Dean Elgar being their only batsman to go past the 200-run mark.

However, it is their openers who have disappointed the most, as their average opening stand in this series was 4.83, which has been their lowest in any Test series (minimum of five innings).

  • Decade's highest

  • While India might not have had easy against Proteas in the past, this series was completely different.

When the Men in Blue imposed the follow-on in the third Test, they had a lead of 335, which was their second-highest against the side to date.

Notably, it is their highest in this decade, while the best record (347), happened in 2009-10, in Kolkata.

  • Follow-on enforcer

  • Enforcing follow-on indicates how much the captain has faith in his bowlers, and the current bowling attack has won the trust of skipper Kohli.

After enforcing the follow-on on Monday, Kohli has now enforced the most number of follow-ons as the Indian captain.

He went past the previous record of seven by Mohammad Azharuddin.

Among others are MS Dhoni (5) and Sourav Ganguly (4).

  • Unique tail-end

  • The South African batsmen have truly disappointed their fans.

However, the tail-enders have done relatively better and, in the process, scripted a record.

The partnerships for the ninth wicket have faced the most deliveries in this series than for any other wicket.

Their five opening partnerships have faced just 76 deliveries, which is their shortest for any wicket in this series.

  • Sixes galore

  • The Indian batsmen were ruthless in this series, as they scored runs aplenty, even via boundaries.

The Indian batsmen hit the most number of sixes of 47 in this series, going past Australia's previous record of 40.

Meanwhile, Rohit too has plundered 19 sixes in the series, as he broke Shimron Hetmyer's record of 15.
