What's the story

Team India was all over West Indies on the opening day of the first Test match at Ahmedabad's Narendra Modi Stadium. Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah led India's bowling attack to dismiss WI for 162 runs. The duo shared seven wickets between them, with Siraj taking four wickets for 40 runs. In response, India finished the day with 121/2 thanks to a steady fifty from KL Rahul. Here is the Day 1 report.

Bowling prowess

Stellar bowling from Indian pacers

Siraj's performance with the new ball meant WI never got going. He had a stellar first spell of 3/19 and returned in the second session to take another wicket. While Bumrah also struck thrice, Kuldeep Yadav also chipped in with two wickets as WI only survived 44.1 overs. The remaining wicket went to Washington Sundar. Justin Greaves (32) was their only batter to touch the 30-run mark. Skipper Roston Chase (24) and Shai Hope (26) also threw away their starts.

Siraj

Best figures in home Tests for Siraj

Siraj finished his stellar spell with 4/40 from 14 overs - his best figures in home Tests. This was overall his eighth four-wicket haul in Tests as his tally also includes five fifers. Playing his 42nd Test as per ESPNcricinfo, the pacer has raced to 127 wickets at 30.39. He now owns 11 wickets against WI at a stellar average of 15. At home, he now owns 23 wickets at 32.30.

WTC

Most WTC wickets in 2025

Playing his seventh Test in 2025, Siraj has raced to 31 wickets at 29.22. This includes two four-fers and as many fifers. Siraj's latest achievement helped him displace Australia's Mitchell Starc (29 wickets) as the bowler with the most ICC World Test Championship wickets this year. Siraj's ability to take wickets at different stages and crucial moments has been instrumental in keeping India competitive as a Test team in varying conditions.

Bumrah

Fine spell from Bumrah as well

Bumrah, who finished his stellar spell with 3/42 from 14 overs, is arguably the most lethal pacer across formats at the moment. Across 49 Tests, he has taken 223 wickets at an incredible average of 19.74. His tally includes 15 fifers and seven four-fers. The right-arm pacer now boasts 16 wickets across three Tests against WI at 10.12. He owns a couple of fifers and a hat-trick against them.

DYK

50 Test wickets in India

With his third wicket, Bumrah equaled Javagal Srinath's record of the fastest Indian pacer to 50 Test scalps at home in just 24 innings. Playing his 13th Test at home, Bumrah has accounted for 50 wickets at an excellent average of 17, as per ESPNcricinfo. Among bowlers with at least 50 Test wickets in India, Bumrah boasts the best average. As per Cricbuzz, Bumrah took the fewest balls to complete 50 Test wickets on Indian soil (1,747).

IND innings

India finish at 121/2

Responding to WI's paltry total, India were off to a perfect start with openers Yashasvi Jaiswal (36 off 54 balls) and KL Rahul (53* off 114 balls) adding 68 runs. Playing his maiden home Test, Sai Sudharsan could only manage seven runs. Skipper Shubman Gil (18* off 42 balls) arrived at number four and saw off to the day alongside Rahul. India hence finished the day at 121/2, only 41 runs behind WI's first-innings total.

Bowlers

WI used six bowlers

Though the visitors used six overs in the day, Jayden Seales (1/21 from 8 overs) and skipper Roston Chase (1/16 from 5 overs) were among the wickets. Seales was the one to trap a well-set Jaiswal while Chase got Sudharsan. Johann Layne, Justin Greaves, Jomel Warrican, and Khary Pierre failed to strike. They would want to inflict some damage on Day 2.
