South Africa's strong start and India's counterattack
South Africa's openers Aiden Markram and Ryan Rickelton put on a solid 82-run partnership. However, Bumrah broke through just before tea, dismissing Markram for 38. Kuldeep then got rid of Rickelton early in the second session, leaving South Africa at 87/2. Despite the breakthroughs, Tristan Stubbs and Temba Bavuma put up a strong resistance against Indian bowlers for most of the session.

The duo of Stubbs and Bavuma put up a solid 84-run partnership before the latter was dismissed by Ravindra Jadeja for 41. Stubbs was on his way to a half-century when Kuldeep struck again, dismissing him for 49. Wiaan Mulder followed soon after, caught off another Kuldeep delivery. He scored 13 runs from 18 balls. Tony de Zorzi and Senuran Muthusamy kept the scoreboard ticking thereafter. Mohammed Siraj dismissed de Zorzi for 28. Muthusamy is unbeaten on 25.
