Pakistani cricketer Nasir Jamshed to undergo trial: Here's why

Pakistani cricketer Nasir Jamshed is all set to undergo a trial in the United Kingdom (UK) for his alleged involvement in a spot-fixing bribery conspiracy during the Pakistan Super League (PSL). Meanwhile, two other cricketers had earlier admitted to the charges of trying to influence other PSL professional cricketers through the financial means. Here are further details on this.

Jamshed tried to influence other cricketers through financial measures

Jamshed, along with Yousef Anwar and Mohammed Ijaz, had previously been accused of offering a bribe to other cricketers between November 2016 and February 2017 during the PSL tournament. They had done so in order to influence them to under-perform during the matches, which would lead to not playing in a competitive manner.

Jamshed banned for 10 years by the PCB

Following a primary investigation by Britain's National Crime Agency, Jamshed was handed a one-year ban by the Pakistan Cricket Board, before it being extended to 10 years. However, in February 2019, all three men had pleaded not guilty during a trial in Manchester Crown Court. Notably, Anwar and Ijaz were granted bail ahead of their sentence, following their admission to the charges last week.

Jamshed to undergo further trial from Tuesday

According to an AFP report, prosecutors would once again be opening the case against Jamshed on Tuesday in a fresh trial at Manchester Crown Court. Meanwhile, Anwar and Ijaz, too, would undergo a fresh trial next year, where they would be given their respective sentences.

Jamshed has had an average cricketing career

As far as the cricketing career of Jamshed is concerned, it has been an average one. While he has played just two Tests, scoring 51 runs, his best performance came in the ODIs, having scored 1,418 in 48 matches, at an average of 31.51. In T20Is, he played 18 matches, scoring 363 runs at an average of 21.35.

Other Pakistani cricketers who were involved in PSL spot-fixing

Other cricketers, who were involved in the spot-fixing controversy, include Sharjeel Khan, Khalid Latif, Mohammad Irfan, Shahzaib Hasan, and Mohammad Nawaz. While Sharjeel and Latif were banned for five years, Irfan and Hasan were handed a year ban, along with a fine of Pakistani Rs. 1 million. As for Nawaz, he was suspended for two months, with a fine of Pakistani Rs. 2,00,000.
