Indian Wells: Potro edges past Federer to win the title

What's the story

Roger Federer's 17-match unbeaten run in 2018 finally came to an end as the Swiss maestro went down against Argentina's Juan Martin del Potro in the final of the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells. The world number one ranked player was beaten by the Argentine 6-4, 6-7 (8-10), 7-6 (7-2) in a tightly contested final. Here is our match report.

Juan Martin del Porto claims his first Masters 1000 Title

Federer was in the hunt for the record sixth title in California but a resurgent del Potro got the better of him to win his first ATP Masters 1000 Title. Federer had almost beaten the Argentine, but he rallied from 3 match points down in the final set to clinch the trophy. Federer, along with Novak Djokovic, have won 5 Indian Wells Masters Title.

Osaka dominates Kasatkina to win her first title

20-year-old Naomi Osaka from Japan claimed her first singles title after she outclassed 20-year-old Daria Kasatkina of Russia 6-3, 6-2 in the final of the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells. In this tournament, Osaka defeated former world number one Maria Sharapova, Karolina Pliskova and the current number one Simona Halep to reach the final. This has been Osaka's breakthrough tournament till date.

Is magnificent Osaka the next big thing in Women's Tennis?

Osaka is now the sixth different women to win Indian Wells in the last six years. She is also the first player to win her first WTA title at the Indian Wells, since Slovakia's Daniela Hantuchova in 2002. Unseeded Naomi Osaka is their third unseeded champion at the Indian Wells after Serena Williams in 1999 and Kim Clijsters in 2005.
