Premier League, Manchester City beat Brentford; Tottenham stunned: Records broken
Manchester City moved 12 points clear at the top after easing past Brentford 2-0 in the Premier League. Riyad Mahrez and Kevin De Bruyne scored for the champions as Brentford suffered a sixth straight defeat. Meanwhile, Tottenham were stunned 2-3 by Southampton in a five-goal thriller. Southampton came twice from behind to get the job done. Here are the records that were broken.
City score two goals versus Brentford
Mahrez put City ahead in the first half with a penalty after Raheem Sterling was fouled. Belgian superstar De Bruyne assured City all three points after capitalizing on a 69th-minute error from Brentford keeper David Raya. The Bees are now just six points above the relegation zone, suffering a sixth straight defeat in all competitions.
Why does it matter?
City are the favorites to win the title and they are moving in the right direction. This was another strong performance and Pep Guardiola will be happy with the three points. As far as Spurs are concerned, this defeat comes as a huge blow in their fight for a top-four finish. Three points would have given them a lot of impetus.
Southampton claim a massive win
Jan Bednarek scored an own goal to open the scoring under pressure from Son Heung-min. Armando Broja leveled the show for the visitors. Saints were the better side in the first half. Son put Spurs back in front but Southampton netted twice in the final 11 minutes. Bergwijn thought he had grabbed a dramatic leveler in stoppage time but was offside.
City have raced to 60 points
Manchester City have won 10 of their 12 Premier League games at home so far this season. Only Crystal Palace and Southampton have taken points off the Citizens at the Etihad Stadium. City claimed their 19th win of the season and have raced to 60 points. They have won 19, drawn three, and lost two. Brentford are 14th with 23 points.
