Sana Mir retained in commentary panel despite Azad Kashmir comment
What's the story
Sana Mir, the former Pakistan captain, has been retained in the commentary panel for the 2025 ICC Women's ODI World Cup match between India and Pakistan. The decision comes despite a major controversy over her on-air mention of "Azad Kashmir." The incident transpired during Pakistan's opening match against Bangladesh last Thursday. Mir mentioned the same while talking about batter Natalia Pervaiz's background.
Controversy erupts
Backlash over Mir's remark
During the match, Mir said, "Yes, they have won the qualifiers, but a lot of these players are new. Natalia, who comes from Kashmir, Azad Kashmir." Mir's remark was met with a wave of criticism on social media, with many users demanding her removal from the commentary panel. She took to X and expressed disappointment at how things were being exaggerated and people in sports were facing unnecessary pressure.
Clarification issued
'Only meant to highlight challenges'
In her clarification, Mir urged fans worldwide to focus on the sport instead of politicizing it, saying there was no "malice in her heart" nor any intention to hurt anyone's sentiments. "It's part of the storytelling we do as commentators about where players come from," she said. "I did that today for two other players coming from other regions too."
Commitment reaffirmed
Mir shared screenshot of research source
Mir also shared a screenshot of where she researches most of her players from, whether from Pakistan or any other country. She acknowledged that the source has been changed by now, but clarified that this is what she was referring to in her comment. Although she didn't feature on Star Sports, India's official Women's World Cup broadcaster, a screenshot of her on-air appearance went viral.
