Josh Hazlewood cleared for Ashes opener; Sean Abbott ruled out
What's the story
Australian fast bowlers Josh Hazlewood and Sean Abbott were forced to leave the field during Day 3 of the 2025/26 Sheffield Shield match between New South Wales and Victoria at Sydney Cricket Ground. Both players underwent scans after their respective exits. While Hazlewood has been cleared to continue his preparations for the impending Ashes opener against England in Perth, Abbott has been ruled out due to a moderate-grade hamstring injury.
Recovery
Hazlewood available for 1st Test
Hazlewood had left the field during Victoria's innings at the SCG, complaining of tightness in his right hamstring. However, he has been cleared of any muscle strain through precautionary scans. Cricket Australia has confirmed that he will join the Australian squad as planned for the Ashes Test in Perth and train as scheduled ahead of it.
Injury update
Abbott ruled out of 1st Test
Abbott, on the other hand, has been ruled out of the Perth game due to a moderate-grade hamstring injury. He had reported left hamstring soreness before leaving the field. Cricket Australia said that a plan for his return will be revealed in the coming weeks. This leaves Australia with a limited number of fast-bowling options as regular captain Pat Cummins is also unavailable for next week's Ashes opener in Perth. Mitchell Starc and Hazlewood will lead the pace attack.
Information
Debut for Doggett?
With Abbott's absence, any further injury could pave the way for a debut appearance by Brendan Doggett. The 31-year-old has been in good form this season, taking 13 Sheffield Shield wickets.
