'Nothing has changed': Shubman Gill on becoming ODI captain
What's the story
Shubman Gill will lead the Indian cricket team in ODIs for the first time, with Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli as his teammates. The 26-year-old batsman clarified that his relationship with both senior players remains unchanged despite the leadership transition. "I think the narrative outside is different, but among us, nothing has changed," Gill said ahead of India's first ODI against Australia in Perth. Notably, Gill has taken over from Rohit as the ODI skipper.
Leadership dynamics
Learning from Rohit, Kohli's experiences
Gill emphasized the importance of learning from Rohit and Kohli's experiences. He said, "Whatever they feel, their experience, whatever they have learned... I go to them and ask what they think." The young captain also spoke about his open and easy interactions with both players. "I have a very good relationship with both Virat Bhai and Rohit Bhai," he said, adding that he often seeks their advice on various matters.
Captaincy honor
Moments to learn from legends
Gill expressed his excitement at leading two players he once idolized. "I mean, obviously, these are the kind of players I used to idolize when I was growing up," he said. The young captain also acknowledged that there would be many moments in this series where he'd learn from them. He added that if he finds himself in a tough position, he wouldn't hesitate to seek their advice.
Legacy continuation
Big shoes to fill in
As he embarks on his journey as captain, Gill sees it as an opportunity to continue the ODI legacy of his predecessors. "Definitely, very exciting. Big shoes for me to fill in to carry forward the legacy of MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma," he said. He also revealed that he's had several discussions with Rohit and Kohli about how they want Indian cricket team culture going forward.
Series
India to take on Australia
Gill's maiden leadership assignment in ODIs is the three-match series against hosts Australia, starting on October 19 in Perth. The series will see the return of Rohit and Kohli to international cricket after a seven-month hiatus. While Australia will miss several key players due to injuries, India are coming with an almost full-strength squad. Notably, Shreyas Iyer will be Gill's deputy in the 50-over format.
