Why South Africa cricket needs someone like Pep Guardiola?Last updated on Oct 08, 2019, 12:26 pm
South Africa are off to a tough start in the ongoing Test series against India, losing the opening Test by 203 runs.
As the Proteas prepare to reel from a series of tough outings, of late, interim coach Enoch Nkwe wants to bring in the philosophy of extremely successful football manager, Pep Guardiola, for a turnaround.
Here is what he feels.
Nkwe warns that Proteas' transition could take time
South Africa are on the verge of rebuilding their squad following the retirement of opening batsman Hashim Amla and fast bowler Dale Steyn.
Owing to this, Nkwe wants to bring in Guardiola's style of innovative gameplay and produce a courageous squad for the future.
However, he has warned that it would not happen overnight and would take some time for the side to turnaround.
What I want is this team to have courage: Nkwe
"What I want is this team to have the courage, in certain situations, to really back themselves. I suppose that every coach that comes in has a different philosophy. I have so much to offer to the game, especially back in our country," said Nkwe.
Nkwe wants to bring in Guardiola's style of innovative gameplay
Nkwe brought forward the fact that the Proteas are struggling to bat for long and should learn to control the sessions, both with the bat and the ball.
As a result, he backed Guardiola's initiative to be more innovative and smarter in tough situations, which inspired Nkwe.
He was also motivated by Guardiola's complete passion for the sport and aims to follow his footsteps.
Nkwe's coaching profile
Nkwe has had a decent stint as domestic coach
Considering Nkwe's coaching career so far, it has been a decent one.
While he had a successful stint with Gauteng U-19 (2010) and South Africa U-19 (2011), he also led Lions Cubs and Gauteng Strikers to success in all domestic competitions between 2013-16.
He also won competitions with Highveld Lions in 2019, besides winning the inaugural Mzansi Super League 2018, with Jozi Stars.
Guardiola could truly be an inspiration for Nkwe and Proteas
As far as Guardiola's managerial career is concerned, he has been one of the greatest managers.
To date, he has managed four clubs and has had success with all.
Keeping his title wins aside, he is well-known for his creative, hard-working and elegant gameplay, with fine anticipation and tactical awareness.
Thus, the author totally agrees that he could be an inspiration for the Proteas.
