The former England skipper opened the scoring with a penalty. He then scored the second with a superb chipped finish just before half-time. Rooney got his third in the 65th minute as Real Salt Lake ended the game with nine men. Lucas Rodriguez and Ulises Segura were the other goal-scorers for United. The side recorded 22 efforts on goal against Real Salt Lake.
