#ThisDayThatYear: Dhoni finishes it off with a last-ball sprint

The crowd at Chinnaswamy stadium went berserk on March 23, 2016, when India pulled off a miraculous victory against Bangladesh in the World T20 group stage fixture. India did not have a perfect start to the campaign as they lost to New Zealand in the tournament opener. Having beaten Pakistan, the Men in Blue defeated Bangladesh in their third encounter. Let's relive the moment.

Bangladesh bowlers restricted the Indians to 146

The openers gave India a blazing start after Bangladesh put them to bat. Two quick wickets gave Bangladesh the edge before Virat Kohli and Suresh Raina balanced it out for India. However, wickets started falling in quick succession following the 14th over. India eventually managed to put up 146-7 at the end of the innings. Al-Amin Hossain and Mustafizur Rahman scalped two wickets apiece.

Bangladesh looked solid, but lost momentum in the middle overs

Despite losing Mohammad Mithun early on, Tamim Iqbal and Sabbir Rahman set the tone for Bangladesh in the chase. However, the spinners pulled India back into the contest during the middle phase. Ravichandran Ashwin dismissed the dangerous Shakib Al Hasan, while Soumya Sarkar fell to Ashish Nehra. It all came down to the wire as Bangladesh required 11 off the final over.

The final over was nothing short of a seesaw battle

The stage was set for Bangladesh as they could smell a historic victory against the Men in Blue. Indian skipper MS Dhoni handed the ball to a rather young Hardik Pandya, who then bowled the final over. Much to Bangladesh's delight, Mushfiqur Rahim smashed Pandya for two consecutive boundaries. The fourth and fifth ball saw both Mushfiqur and Mahmudullah getting caught in the deep.

Dhoni's presence of mind stole the show

Dhoni acted smartly ahead of the penultimate delivery and placed his best fielder (Ravindra Jadeja) at deep mid-wicket. Nonetheless, Bangladesh felt the pressure with two needed off the final delivery. Shuvagata Hom missed the length-ball, but attempted to steal a bye. Dhoni, who collected the ball ran swiftly and dislodged the stumps. India sealed victory as non-striker Mustafizur missed the run by a whisker.

India failed to qualify for final despite a successful run

Following the thriller against Bangladesh, India went on to defeat Australia and booked the semis berth. They faced West Indies in a high-voltage semi-final clash, but lost the match by seven wickets. West Indies later clinched the title by defeating England in the final.
