What's the story

European Union (EU) countries have agreed by a majority to phase out all gas imports from Russia by the end of 2027. The decision was taken during a meeting of energy ministers in Luxembourg, where they approved a plan by the European Commission. This plan aims to eliminate both pipeline and liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports from Russia. However, it still requires approval from the EU's parliament.

Minister's statement

A crucial step toward energy independence

Denmark's Energy Minister Lars Aagaard, whose country currently holds the EU's rotating presidency, called the move a "crucial" step toward making Europe energy independent. He admitted that while progress has been made in reducing Russian gas and oil imports over recent years, more work remains to be done. The commission is also calling for LNG imports to be phased out one year early, by January 2027, as part of a new round of penalties aimed at sapping Moscow's war chest.

Opposition stance

Hungary, Slovakia oppose ban

However, Hungary and Slovakia have opposed the ban on Russian gas imports. Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said the ban would "kill" their safe energy supply. He argued that Hungary needs to import gas from Russia due to geographical constraints. The proposal approved on Monday is expected to be backed by the European Parliament, per AFP.

Strategy details

EU's strategy against Russia

According to the proposal, new contracts for Russian gas imports will be banned on January 1, 2026. Existing contracts will benefit from a transition period, with inflows allowed under short-term contracts until June 17, 2026, and long-term contracts until January 1, 2028. Per Brussels, Russian gas still accounts for approximately 13% of EU imports in 2025, worth more than 15 billion euros per year.
