What's the story

India and Mauritius have signed a five-year agreement to strengthen their energy partnership. The deal, signed during Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri's official visit to the island nation on August 20-21, will see Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) meet all of Mauritius's import requirements for petrol, diesel, and aviation turbine fuel. This move is likely to bolster India's position as a major energy-security partner in the Indian Ocean region.

Agreement

MoU signed to enhance cooperation in oil and gas

Along with the long-term supply agreement, a government-to-government memorandum of understanding (MoU) was also signed to enhance cooperation in oil and gas.

The MoU covers areas like petroleum product supplies, training and capacity building, as well as biofuels.

This is the first such long-term supply agreement by an Indian public-sector oil marketing company outside South Asia in recent years.

Supply assurance

Deal aims to ensure stable fuel supply

The long-term sales and purchase agreement between IOC and Mauritius's State Trading Corporation aims to ensure stable fuel supply for the island nation while minimizing exposure to price volatility.

Under this pact, IOC will meet all import requirements of Mauritius for motor spirit (petrol), high-speed diesel (diesel), and aviation turbine fuel (ATF).

This comes as countries are looking to bolster energy security amid global fuel market disruptions.

Strategic partnership

India's strategic and economic footprint in Mauritius

The deal with Mauritius reinforces India's position as the country's key fuel supplier and enhances its strategic and economic footprint in the Indian Ocean region.

It also formalizes a wider energy relationship between India and Mauritius, with the MoU providing a framework for cooperation in conventional fuels as well as emerging areas like biofuels.

Puri met Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam on August 20, where they exchanged the oil and gas MoU and witnessed the signing of the IOC-STC agreement.
