Missing Indian Sikh woman converts, marries Pakistani man
What's the story
Sarabjeet Kaur, a 52-year-old Indian Sikh woman from Kapurthala, Punjab, went missing during a pilgrimage to Pakistan. The pilgrimage was held on the occasion of Guru Nanak Dev's Prakash Parv. Kaur had crossed the Wagah-Attari border with over 1,900 other Sikh pilgrims on November 4 under a bilateral agreement for religious visits. However, she was missing when the group returned to India on November 13.
New life
Kaur converts to Islam, marries Pakistani man
Reportedly, Kaur has converted to Islam and married a local man in Pakistan. A 'nikahnama' (Islamic marriage contract) in Urdu has surfaced, confirming her conversion and marriage. The document states that she married Nasir Hussain from Sheikhupura after adopting the name "Noor." Pakistani immigration authorities informed Indian officials about Kaur's absence during exit clearance procedures.
Ongoing probe
Indian authorities investigate Kaur's disappearance
Indian officials are now trying to collect more details about Kaur and her family from her native village. Her ex-husband, Karnail Singh, lives in England, and they have two sons together. Notably, Kaur's passport from Punjab's Muktsar district mentions her father's name instead of her ex-husband's. The pilgrimage was led by Giani Kuldip Singh Gargajj, the acting Jathedar of Akal Takht.
