What's the story

The death toll from the devastating fire at the Wang Fuk Court housing estate in Tai Po, Hong Kong, has reached 55. The blaze, which broke out on Wednesday afternoon, continues to burn more than a day later. Many residents are still unaccounted for and search and rescue operations are underway. When the fire broke out, the complex was under renovation and encased in bamboo scaffolding and safety netting.

Ongoing crisis

Fire spreads rapidly, rescue efforts continue

Three individuals who worked for a construction company have been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter in connection with the incident. Police have accused the three of "gross negligence." Officials also said they are investigating "potential corruption" linked to renovations at Wang Fuk Court. The Independent Commission Against Corruption announced that it had set up a dedicated task force "given the significant public interest in this matter."

Legal proceedings

Investigation underway, arrests made

Authorities are also looking into whether building materials used in the renovation met fire safety standards. As of Thursday afternoon, fires at four of Wang Fuk Court's seven residential buildings have been extinguished, according to local media reports. Fires are still burning in the remaining three buildings, but they are under control, officials said. Authorities have deployed four drones to monitor the situation, as well as 11 fire hoses and 26 rescue teams.

Relief efforts

Donations pour in for fire victims

In the wake of this tragedy, several major Chinese corporations have stepped up to support the victims. Alibaba donated HK$20 million (US$2.6 million) for rescue efforts and transitional housing. ByteDance, Xiaomi, Tencent and Anta also announced donations totaling US$6.4 million. Meanwhile, Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for "all-out efforts" to minimize casualties and pledged emergency assistance through the Red Cross.
