Putin pledges 'unwavering support' to Iran's new leader Mojtaba Khamenei
What's the story
Russian President Vladimir Putin has congratulated Mojtaba Khamenei on his appointment as Iran's new supreme leader. The leadership change follows the death of his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in US-Israeli airstrikes last week. In a message to the younger Khamenei, Putin said, "I would like to reaffirm our unwavering support for Tehran and solidarity with our Iranian friends," adding that "Russia has been and will remain a reliable partner" to Iran.
Leadership support
Mojataba's leadership will require great courage: Putin
He said he was confident that Mojtaba would carry on his father's legacy "with honor" and unite the Iranian people "in the face of severe trials." The Russian leader also acknowledged that Mojtaba's tenure would require great courage and dedication as the US and Israel have continued a large-scale military campaign against Iran since last week. Iran has retaliated with drone and missile strikes targeting Israel and Gulf states that are home to US military assets.
Intelligence sharing
Russia has been providing real-time intelligence on US military assets
Reports also suggest that Russia has been providing Iran with real-time intelligence on US military assets in the Middle East. The Washington Post reported that Moscow has shared information about US warships, aircraft, and other military assets since the conflict began. Three officials confirmed this on condition of anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the matter.
International response
China says appointment in accordance with Iran's constitution
China has also backed the appointment of Khamenei, saying it was in accordance with Iran's constitution and that it opposes any attempts to target Iran's newly appointed Supreme Leader. China's Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun emphasized that this decision was a domestic matter and should be respected under Iran's Constitution. "China opposes interference in other countries' internal affairs under any pretext, and Iran's sovereignty, security and territorial integrity should be respected," he said.
