Explained: Why Qatari nationals can now travel to US visa-free
Qatar has become the second Muslim-majority nation, after Brunei, to join a United States program that allows its citizens to travel to the US without a visa. The Department of State and Homeland Security announced this development, stating that Qatar met all stringent criteria for the visa waiver program. These requirements include maintaining a low rate of visa refusals and overstays, as well as ensuring reciprocal treatment for American travelers.
Qatar's strategic partnership with US
The US departments acknowledged Qatar's exceptional partnership and growing strategic relationship with the United States. They said, "This is further evidence of our strategic partnership and our shared commitment to security and stability." Qatar has played a crucial role in brokering a cease-fire in Gaza and was a key US ally during the withdrawal from Afghanistan. It is now the 42nd country to join this program.
Visa-free travel benefits a fraction of Qatar's population
Despite Qatar's total population exceeding 3 million, only around 320,000 Qatari citizens are eligible for this program. This is contingent on them holding valid passports. The majority of residents in Qatar are foreign workers and expatriates without Qatari citizenship. The visa waiver program allows citizens from eligible countries to enter the US for business or tourism purposes up to 90 days without a visa.
Electronic authorization still required for visa-free travel
Although the program eliminates the need for a visa, travelers from eligible countries must still secure authorization through the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA). This process is conducted online and does not require an in-person interview like traditional visa applications. Starting October 1, US citizens will also enjoy reciprocal benefits, being able to stay in Qatar for up to 90 days without a visa.
