Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the importance of ensuring the safety and security of Indian seafarers during a meeting with United States President Donald Trump on Wednesday. The two leaders met on the sidelines of the Group of Seven (G7) Summit in France. During the meeting, PM Modi stressed that "freedom of navigation should be ensured" and highlighted that lakhs of Indian seafarers work globally in maritime trade, adding their security is equally important.

"We have always said that freedom of navigation should be ensured and we should also stress upon that. Lakhs of Indian seafarers are on duty in different seas of the world in the sector of maritime trade. I believe that their security is equally important," Modi told Trump. "I am confident that in the deal (with Iran) security of seafarers will be ensured and prioritized..." he added.

PM thanks Trump for US's role in West Asia peace
In his meeting with President Trump, PM Modi also thanked the US leader for his efforts in bringing peace to West Asia. He expressed satisfaction over the close cooperation between Indian and US teams to achieve common goals and emphasized a "new speed and energy" in bilateral relations. Further, PM Modi spoke about the strategic importance of the Strait of Hormuz. "Keeping the Strait of Hormuz open is vital for global economy. Hope peace is permanent in the Gulf."
