There are 'consequences' when people cross US border illegally: Trump

    What's the story

US President Donald Trump said there are "consequences when people cross our border illegally" and claims many who do so are "using children for their own sinister-purposes."

Trump's tweet came several days after the government said over 1,800 children separated at the US-Mexico border have been reunited with parents and sponsors after a federal judge ordered the reunions.

Hundreds of children still remain separated.

    Here's Trump's tweet

Please understand, there are consequences when people cross our Border illegally, whether they have children or not - and many are just using children for their own sinister purposes. Congress must act on fixing the DUMBEST WORST immigration laws anywhere in the world! Vote “R”

    Illegal immigrants

What was Trump's "zero tolerance" policy?

In May this year, the White House had enacted a "zero tolerance" policy for illegal immigrants, which treats undocumented entries into the US as criminal cases.

While children of such immigrants were separated from their families, the adults are being held separately in "jails" as they await prosecution.

The Trump administration has been severely criticized for the policy's harshness.
