AI helps researchers find EV chargers in neighborhoods

Auto

Penn State researchers have figured out a low-cost way to turn regular streetlights into electric vehicle chargers, making life easier for city residents without home charging options.
They installed 23 of these chargers across Kansas City as part of a pilot project, using AI to help select locations with high demand and to ensure equitable access across diverse neighborhoods.

The pilot project showed these chargers are faster and cheaper

By using existing city poles near curbside parking, these chargers are cheaper and simpler to set up than traditional stations—great news for apartment dwellers and visitors who don't have garages.
The pilot showed they charge cars faster and help cut down on gas use and emissions compared to regular stations.

The team aims to improve their placement models

The team plans to improve their placement models by adding data like weather and neighborhood demographics, aiming to make charging even more accessible.
Their Kansas City project could help other cities roll out affordable, fair EV charging for everyone.
