Maruti just hit 3cr sales milestone: Tracing the carmaker's journey

Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL), the top passenger vehicle maker in India, has hit a major milestone by achieving over three crore units in cumulative domestic sales. The achievement, which took 42 years to accomplish, makes Maruti Suzuki the first car manufacturer in India to reach this landmark. The company reached its first crore in 28 years and two months, second in seven years and five months, and third in a record six years and four months.

Alto, Wagon R, and Swift top-selling models
Among its extensive portfolio, Maruti Suzuki's Alto remains the top-selling model with over 47 lakh units sold. It is followed by Wagon R (34 lakh units) and Swift (32 lakh units). The company started its journey on December 14, 1983, by delivering its first car, the iconic Maruti 800. Today, it offers over 170 variants across 19 models with different powertrains and transmission options.
Future plans
CEO expresses gratitude for the achievement
Hisashi Takeuchi, Managing Director and CEO of MSIL, expressed gratitude for the achievement. He said, "When I look at the length and breadth of India and think that three crore customers have placed their trust in Maruti Suzuki to realize their dream of mobility, it fills me with humility and gratitude." However, he also noted that with car penetration at about 33 vehicles per 1,000 people, there is still a long way to go.
