What's the story

Toyota is gearing up to launch a new off-road SUV, the Land Cruiser FJ. According to Creative 331, the vehicle will be unveiled in Japan in Q2 of 2026. The model was first teased two years ago but has remained largely under wraps since then. The upcoming FJ is expected to be smaller than its predecessor and similar in size to the Toyota Corolla Cross.

Specifications

SUV will likely be powered by 2.7-liter 4-cylinder engine

The new Land Cruiser FJ will be powered by a naturally aspirated, 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine, similar to the one used in the entry-level Hilux. The engine produces 163hp and 245Nm of torque in the truck. The SUV is expected to be stubbier than its Toyota stablemate but similar in length to Ford Bronco Sport (172.7-inch).

Platform debate

What about its platform?

There is still some uncertainty about the platform on which Toyota will build the new FJ. The latest report suggests it could be based on the IMV-0 platform, a ladder frame architecture used by Hilux Champ but not compliant with US safety standards. Earlier reports had hinted at a possible TNGA-F architecture, already used for Land Cruiser, Tacoma and Tundra models.

Market strategy

SUV could debut at Japan Mobility Show

The FJ is expected to be launched in North America next year. It will likely come with upgraded powertrain options for the US market, possibly including petrol and hybrid variants. If Toyota's 2.7-liter engine fits, it could also offer a turbocharged, 2.4-liter four-cylinder option in the US, which produces up to 326hp. The new FJ Land Cruiser could be unveiled as soon as at the Japan Mobility Show on October 20.
