VinFast's $500 million boost: More EVs coming to Tamil Nadu

Auto

Vietnamese EV brand VinFast is investing $500 million to expand its Thoothukudi plant in Tamil Nadu, as part of a bigger $2 billion plan.
The new deal with the state government gives them 200 extra hectares, letting VinFast develop manufacturing for electric busses and e-scooters alongside their current SUVs.

What's happening at the plant?

The Thoothukudi factory, currently operational, currently sells VF 6 and VF 7 electric SUVs in India—think premium rides with the VF6 starting at ₹16.49 lakh.
Right now, it can make up to 50,000 vehicles a year but could ramp up to 150,000 soon.
With this expansion, expect new lines for busses and two-wheelers.

Why does it matter?

This move isn't just about more vehicles—it means more local jobs and a stronger supply chain for Tamil Nadu.
VinFast is also planning better charging networks and battery recycling here.
If you're eyeing an EV or just rooting for greener tech in India, this is good news all around.
