Waymo recalls almost 4,000 robotaxis after construction zone bug
Auto
Waymo, Alphabet's self-driving car company, just recalled almost 4,000 robotaxis because a software bug made them drive into closed highway construction zones.
There were at least 13 incidents between April and May, six in Phoenix and seven in San Francisco, which led Waymo to pause all freeway rides starting May 19.
Waymo cars remain on surface streets
Even with the recall, Waymo cars are still cruising on surface streets while engineers work on a fix.
This is their sixth recall so far, with earlier ones tied to flooded roads and tricky situations near school busses.
Despite these bumps, Waymo's fleet has logged over 170 million autonomous miles and is expanding to more than 20 cities worldwide, including London and Tokyo.
