Uber, Ola strike turns violent as mob stones cabs
1,00,000 cabs stayed off roads as protesting Uber and Ola drivers ransacked the Uber office at HSR Layout. Stones were pelted at moving cabs. In Sampigehalli, a cab was stopped, passengers forced out and the driver assaulted. Roads at Jalahalli, Majestic and other parts were blocked. During April'16-January'17, Bengaluru Urban recorded the highest number of teen pregnancies in Karnataka with 8,099 cases registered. Belagavi (6,416), Mysuru (3,500) and Ballari (3,018) followed. Karnataka registered 59,717 pregnant girls under 18, making up 7.01% of the state's pregnancies and indicating high-risk data. Teenage abortions have also witnessed a spurt. Gynaecologists attribute the trend to promiscuity, early marriages, decreased awareness about contraception, etc.
The government has announced 100 more skywalks at strategic locations across Bengaluru to ease pedestrian movement. Tenders have already been floated. The BBMP also expects a hike in revenue from advertisement tax on the structures. A Rs. 1.5cr skywalk with two lifts was inaugurated near the Sir M Visvesvaraya College in Konena Agrahara ward in East Bengaluru. Ten more are ready to be opened.
Karnataka is looking at a sharp cut in food production this year due to two consecutive droughts. Against an average annual production of 1.35cr tonnes, just 91.45L tonnes is expected this season. The BBMP, Bangalore University and Karnataka PWD are among the 859 TDS deductors who have been sent prosecution notices by the Income Tax Department for delayed remittance or non-remittance. 150 of them, issued in the last one month, are from 2016-17.
