12 million Indians now work in gig economy: Economic survey
India's gig economy is booming—there are now 12 million gig workers, up 55% since FY21.
This surge is fueled by more smartphone users and digital payments, with gig jobs now making up about 2% of the workforce.
Where are all these gigs?
E-commerce leads the way with 3.7 million workers, followed by logistics (1.5 million), BFSI and manufacturing (1 million each), then retail, transport, and IT.
What's tough about gig work?
Many face real challenges: 40% earn less than ₹15,000 a month, and issues like unpredictable income, algorithm-driven pay gaps, and long hours can make things tough.
What's being done to help?
The survey suggests setting minimum pay per hour or task—including waiting time—to close wage gaps.
There's also a push for better training and transparency so gigs can become more secure careers.
By 2029-30, non-agri gigs could reach nearly 7% of jobs—and add serious value to India's economy.
