Amazon settles $210 million tax and labor case in Italy
Amazon just agreed to pay about €180 million ($210 million) to wrap up a big tax fraud and illegal labor investigation in Italy.
Authorities said Amazon's local logistics arm used outside companies to supply delivery workers, dodging VAT and social security payments.
As part of the deal, Amazon also had to end a staff monitoring system.
Why this matters: crackdown on corporate practices
This probe started back in July 2024, with Milan prosecutors seizing over €120 million from Amazon during their investigation.
It's part of a wider push in Italy against big companies skirting labor and tax rules—over 30 firms have paid more than €1 billion so far.
Amazon says, "Our engagement with Italian institutions and other stakeholders has improved compliance across the entire industry."
Similar investigations have included other major names like DHL, FedEx, UPS, and Esselunga.
