AMD will pay 15% US tax on AI chips sold to China
AMD CEO Lisa Su says the company is set to pay a 15% fee to the US government on revenue from AI chip sales to China.
This move comes after a deal with the Trump administration, which now lets AMD and NVIDIA export some AI chips to China under special licenses—partially lifting an earlier ban imposed over national security concerns.
What's behind this deal?
Announced at a Wired conference, Su explained that AMD can ship its MI308 AI chips to China under special licenses.
The catch: 15% of sales revenue from these exports goes straight to the US government, as part of the deal negotiated with the Trump administration following national security concerns.
Why people are talking about it
Some legal experts think this new export tax might clash with the US Constitution, since export taxes are usually not allowed.
Plus, this is the first time chip companies have had to share revenue like this with the government.
Meanwhile, some lawmakers want even tighter rules as tech tensions between the US and China continue.
