AMD: News
AMD stands for Advanced Micro Devices. This American company headquartered in Santa Clara, California, is known for manufacturing computer processors that rival Intel. Initially, AMD manufactured its own processors but soon outsourced production to foundries such as TSMC to keep up with the demand. The company also spun off GlobalFoundries in 2009. AMD was founded in 1969 as a Silicon Valley start-up. As of September 2021, Lisa Su serves as the company’s President and CEO while Mark Papermaster is the Chief Technical Officer. Although AMD has earned a reputation for its consumer-facing desktop and notebook computer processors, its products include microprocessors, embedded processors, motherboard chipsets, and graphics cards for servers, workstations, and other applications. The company’s new Zen-based CPUs and APUs are an x86 based architecture introduced in 2017 and built from the ground up by AMD. Zen processors were fabricated using the 14nm process node. The newest Zen 3 CPUs use TSMC’s 7nm process node for manufacturing, thereby improving performance significantly compared to its predecessors.
