BSNL, Vodafone Idea in talks to share network infrastructure: Report
What's the story
State-owned telecom giant Bharat Sanchar Nigam (BSNL) and private operator Vodafone Idea are reportedly in discussions to share network infrastructure. The move comes as part of BSNL's strategy to strengthen its network capabilities. According to CNBC-TV18, both companies have already started intra-circle roaming (ICR) arrangements in 12-13 telecom circles across India.
Partnership autonomy
DoT gives BSNL strategic flexibility to assess partnerships
The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) isn't pushing BSNL toward any specific partnership with Vodafone Idea. Instead, it has been given the strategic flexibility to independently assess and decide on the nature of its partnerships.
This includes the option of sharing network infrastructure with the private telecom operator.
Such arrangements would allow one operator's subscribers to access another operator's network in areas where coverage is limited.
Connectivity enhancement
Potential benefits of infrastructure-sharing for BSNL and Vodafone Idea
The potential infrastructure-sharing talks between BSNL and Vodafone Idea could further bolster the former's efforts to expand its network reach and improve connectivity.
The move could also enable both operators to make more efficient use of their existing telecom infrastructure.
However, it is important to note that the details and scope of a possible infrastructure-sharing partnership are still being explored by both parties.
