Digg's mobile app is gone after massive layoffs
Digg, the once-popular news site co-founded by Kevin Rose, just laid off much of its team and shut down its mobile app.
CEO Justin Mezzell said the startup is not closing, described severe bot problems and said the company will rebuild Digg with a smaller team.
Now, Digg's app is gone from the App Store and its website only has a layoff announcement.
Bot problems plagued Digg's relaunch
Digg tried relaunching in closed beta with 67,000 users across 21 communities like gaming and tech.
But when it opened up in January, SEO spammers swarmed in, forcing it to ban tens of thousands of accounts as its tools couldn't keep up with clever AI bots.
Rose returns to Digg
Even with all these shakeups, the iconic Diggnation podcast is still running.
Meanwhile, Kevin Rose will return to Digg as his primary focus while continuing an advisory role at True Ventures.
