Buying packaged goods on e-commerce platforms will soon become easier
What's the story
The Ministry of Consumer Affairs has proposed a major change for e-commerce platforms. The proposal suggests that these platforms should have filters based on 'country of origin' for packaged goods. The move is aimed at making online shopping more transparent and helping consumers make informed choices about the products they buy.
Regulatory change
Proposed amendment mandates country of origin information
The proposed amendment, called the Draft Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) (Second) Amendment Rules, 2025, seeks to modify existing regulations from 2011. It mandates that "every e-commerce entity selling imported products shall provide a searchable and sortable filter for the country of origin, with their product listings." This would make it easier for consumers to find out where a product comes from while shopping online.
Support for initiatives
Supports 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' and 'Vocal for Local' initiatives
The proposed amendment also directly supports the government's 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' and 'Vocal for Local' initiatives. It aims to make 'Made in India' products more discoverable on e-commerce platforms. The move is expected to create a level playing field for Indian manufacturers, giving domestic products equal visibility as imported goods and encouraging consumers to opt for locally made alternatives.
Compliance assistance
Enhancing compliance monitoring and consumer trust
The proposed country-of-origin filters will also help authorities monitor compliance more effectively. It would allow them to verify product information and identify violations without having to manually check each listing. The ministry said this move is a major step toward creating a transparent, consumer-friendly, and competitive e-commerce ecosystem that aligns with national priorities and boosts consumer trust in digital marketplaces.
