Low-cost carrier FlyDubai orders 75 jets from Boeing for $13B
What's the story
FlyDubai, the lower-cost sister carrier of Emirates, has placed a major order for 75 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft. The deal is estimated to be worth $13 billion. The announcement comes after FlyDubai's recent purchase of 150 Airbus A321neo planes for $24 billion at the Dubai Air Show. This order continues FlyDubai's commitment to Boeing 737s, although it recently expanded its fleet with Airbus A321neo aircraft.
Strategic alignment
Fleet expansion aligns with Dubai's aviation ambitions
Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, the Chairman of both FlyDubai and Emirates, emphasized the importance of proactive fleet planning to meet rising travel demand. He said, "Anticipating future needs is a defining factor in the success of any airline and today's announcement reflects our commitment to that principle." The order also comes as Dubai International Airport (DXB) prepares for record passenger numbers this year.
Global backing
Dubai's airport expansion project gains international support
Dubai is working on a $35 billion expansion of Al Maktoum International Airport, which will have five runways. The UK's Export Finance has issued a $3.5 billion letter of interest to support construction at Al Maktoum. Paul Griffiths, CEO of Dubai Airports, said the new airport will be capable of handling 150 million passengers annually by 2032 and will incorporate advanced technology for seamless passenger experience.
