Around 400 stocks hit 1-year highs in stock market today
The Indian stock market witnessed a significant surge today with nearly 387 stocks reaching their fresh 52-week highs during intraday trade on BSE. This group of high-performing stocks included prominent names such as ICICI Bank, HCL Tech, Tech Mahindra, JSW Steel, Sun Pharma, and Bajaj Finserv. Other companies that also hit their fresh one-year highs were LTIMindtree, Naukri, Shriram Finance, Dixon Technologies (India), Gujarat Fluorochemicals, Mahindra and Mahindra Financial Services, and more.
Sensex, Nifty up amid mixed global cues
The Indian stock market benchmarks, the Sensex and Nifty, also reached their fresh record highs of 83,184.34 and 25,445.70, respectively. This occurred despite mixed global cues as attention turns toward the US Fed policy outcome due later this week. The session concluded with a slight gain for both indices. The Nifty 50 rose by 0.11% to settle at 25,383 points while the Sensex increased by 0.12% to close at nearly 82,988 points.
Market anticipates US Fed's rate cut decision
The market is now focused on the US Fed, which is anticipated to reduce rates by 25 bps on Wedding. Some experts predict a larger rate cut of 50 bps due to indications of an economic slowdown in the US. "The domestic market traded in a narrow range with a positive bias as participants are keenly awaiting the Fed's decision this week," said Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Financial Services.
Performance hinges on motivations behind Fed's decision
Swapnil Aggarwal, the director of VSRK Capital, highlighted that the market's reaction will hinge on the motivations behind the Fed's decision. "The positive market effect could be muted if the rate cut responds to concerns about a slowing economy or rising unemployment," he said. However, if rates are cut due to low inflation and a stable growth outlook, markets may rally in response to this more favorable borrowing environment.
Nifty constituents, and other stocks show strong performance
Out of the 50 Nifty constituents, 26 stocks ended in the positive with NTPC leading at a gain of 2.6%. Other notable gainers included JSW Steel, Hindalco Industries, Shriram Finance, Larsen & Toubro, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank and Eicher Motors. Mid- and small-cap stocks also continued their strong performance for the second consecutive session. The Nifty Midcap 100 index rose by 0.38% to settle above the 60,000 mark while the Nifty Smallcap 100 index increased by 0.16%.
