India, Brazil sign telecom MoU to boost digital cooperation
What's the story
India and Brazil have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to strengthen their cooperation in telecommunications and information and communications technologies (ICT). The agreement was signed during the 12th BRICS Communications Ministers' Meeting in Pune. Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia represented India, while Brazil's Communications Minister Frederico de Siqueira Filho represented his country.
Agreement details
Scindia lauds India-Brazil partnership
The MoU establishes a formal framework for India and Brazil to collaborate on telecommunications, ICT, digital infrastructure, and emerging technology areas.
Scindia said the partnership would cover a wide range of issues such as universal connectivity, cybersecurity, digital public infrastructure, capacity building, and technical knowledge exchange.
"The MoU will deepen bilateral collaboration on universal connectivity," he said in a social media post.
Future prospects
MoU to boost research, innovation cooperation
The agreement also paves the way for enhanced cooperation in research and innovation, especially in new communication technologies.
Officials expect this framework will facilitate exchanges between both countries and promote collaboration on developing and deploying digital infrastructure.
India and Brazil have separately emphasized the need to coordinate more closely in international discussions around telecommunications and technology.
Global impact
Strategic shift in international telecommunications cooperation
The new telecom agreement doesn't immediately bind either country to specific programs. However, it does provide a framework for officials and institutions to identify areas for potential joint work.
With both countries looking to play a bigger role in shaping the global technology agenda, this MoU signals a shift from existing discussions on connectivity and digital infrastructure toward more structured cooperation.
