Modi government denies US accusations of dumping basmati rice
What's the story
India has strongly rejected the US's allegations of "dumping" rice into its market. The Indian government clarified that most of its rice exports are premium-grade basmati, which is usually priced higher than non-basmati varieties. The clarification came after US President Donald Trump hinted at imposing more tariffs on Indian rice imports due to these alleged practices.

Trade secretary addresses US allegations
Indian Trade Secretary Rajesh Agrawal addressed the US's "dumping" allegations at a press conference. He said, "We don't see a prima facie case of dumping, and as far as we know, the US has not started any anti-dumping investigation either." This statement highlighted India's position on the matter and countered Trump's claims.
Exports
India's rice exports to the US
India is the world's largest rice exporter, having exported 20.2 million metric tons of rice in the 2024/25 financial year ending March. Out of this, 335,554 tons were sent to the US with basmati making up a major chunk at 274,213 tons. This further highlights India's position as a key player in global rice trade.
Ongoing talks
India-US trade discussions continue
Despite the tariff concerns, India and the US continue to engage in trade discussions. A team led by Agrawal recently met US Deputy Trade Representative Rick Switzer in Delhi. The talks were part of ongoing bilateral trade discussions.
