Now, Netflix is trying cheaper weekly plans, starting Rs. 65
To up its game in the Indian market, Netflix is trying new weekly subscription plans. The offerings start at Rs. 65 and go up to Rs. 200, making up a variety of budget-focused packages for users with different needs. However, as of now, not every Netflix user can avail these plans. Here's everything you need to know.
Four weekly plans being tested
Multiple users have reported that Netflix is testing four weekly subscription plans - Mobile, Basic, Standard, and Premium. The Mobile plan comes at Rs. 65 and promises SD content for a single mobile screen, meaning you could either watch on a tablet or phone at a time. Meanwhile, the Basic, Standard, and Premium plans come at Rs. 125, Rs. 165, and Rs. 200, respectively.
No screen type restriction on other three plans
Apart from the Mobile plan, none of the three weekly plans come with screen type restriction. In fact, these plans are just the weekly version of the regular monthly plans users subscribe to. The Basic plan offers SD content for a single screen, while those costing Rs. 165 and Rs. 200 offer HD and UltraHD content with simultaneous streaming on two and four screens.
Weekly plans would give more options to Indians
With these offerings, Netflix might finally provide Indians an option to watch their favorite shows without paying a high price. For instance, if someone wants to watch a particular movie/show, they could go for the entry-level Mobile plan and binge the series in seven days.
Netflix confirmed the test but final roll out remains unclear
When contacted by Gadgets360, a Netflix spokesperson confirmed the development, noting that it will be "testing different options in select countries where members can, for example, watch Netflix on their mobile device for a lower price and subscribe in shorter increments of time." However, the representative claimed that this is just a limit test, which might not roll out for a wider user-base.
Current price of monthly Netflix plans
As for monthly prices, Netflix's Basic subscription comes at Rs. 500, while the Standard and Premium packages come at Rs. 650 and Rs. 800, respectively. To note, the company has also been testing the Mobile-only plan with some users at Rs. 250 per month.
Other players in the category still remain more affordable
Even if Netflix manages to launch the cheaper weekly plans, it would still remain costlier than other players in the game. For some perspective, Amazon Prime Video, Netflix's prime competitor, comes at just Rs. 129/month, while Hotstar comes at Rs. 199/month. Meanwhile, ZEE5 is available at Rs. 99/month while 3-month ALTBalaji subscription can be availed at Rs. 100.
