Why Samsung has been fined $445.5M in the US
What's the story
Samsung Electronics has been ordered to pay almost $445.5 million in damages by a federal jury in Marshall, Texas. The verdict was delivered on Friday after finding that the tech giant had infringed on patents related to 4G, 5G, and Wi-Fi communications standards. The jury concluded that several of Samsung's products, including laptops and Galaxy smartphones, violated four Collision Communications patents.
Legal battle
Collision Communications filed lawsuit in 2023
The lawsuit was filed by Collision Communications, a Peterborough, New Hampshire-based company, in 2023. The company accused Samsung of infringing patents aimed at improving wireless network efficiency. Collision claimed that the patents were based on research done by defense contractor BAE Systems. However, BAE Systems is not a party to this case and has no involvement in it whatsoever.
Denial
Samsung has denied allegations
Samsung has denied the allegations leveled by Collision Communications. The tech giant contended that the patents in question are invalid. This case is just one of many multi-million dollar patent infringement verdicts Samsung has faced in recent years at the same Marshall, Texas court.
